Scottish Highland Games

Have you ever been?

When Daniel & I first moved here to Florida last year we missed it and were kind of bummed. I remember thinking there is always next year.

Well here we are and we found out about it accidentally yesterday. We were at Starbucks in the morning and we were talking about things to do this weekend.

A guy standing next to us overheard our conversations and told us about the Highland Games. Then it was set, we were going to go in the morning.

It was a marvelous & beautiful morning out and we headed out to the Clay Country Fairgrounds from some good ole Scottish games!

I honestly was excited about going. I was thinking it was just going to be some small little thing with no one really there. I was wrong, really wrong. Thousands of people came out.

There were a lot of vendors selling beautiful Celtic jewelry and clothes. Yummy smells waifed through the air, calling & begging you to try something.

We saw animals of all kinds and chickens that were more like puppy’s and loved to be held. There was much to be seen. It was a windy day though, so a lot of dirt swirled around and made you thirsty.

It was fun watching grown men & women throw things! The women scared me though, I was afraid they were going to end up throwing things right onto their heads.

It honestly was the most fun I have ever had watching poles and sacks being thrust into the air!

We had a great time and we took lot’s of pictures, here’s a few of them.

  1. I haven’t been to the Scottish Games, but your pictures are nifty. I have heard bagpipe bands before, and seen some other wonderful displays at Renaissance Faires. And I’ve gotten a couple of lessons in Irish dancing, at science fiction conventions.

I had the biggest surprise when I scrolled down and saw..YOU? in a tartan kilt?!! And your handsome husband, too? I didn’t know he played the bagpipes! ;-)
Sounds like a great Saturday. There is an annual Scottich “Highland Fling” festival here in May, but I have never been. I think I’ll try to go this year, though, after reading about your day at one.

What fun! I’m sorry I missed it this year but will definitely keep it in mind for 2010.
